Destination: Wilderness Abu Camp is set in one of the most phenomenal wilderness areas in Africa. Each year, the Okavango waters flow from catchment areas over 1,000 km away into the Kalahari Desert, to create one of the largest inland delta systems in the world. It is here in this oasis (in the Delta’s west), that this iconic camp can be found. Abu is the perfect location to encounter celebrated African animals on land, water or on foot, with our professional guides across the expansive 180,000-hectare reserve.
Experience: There is much to explore in this exceptional area of the Okavango. Guests can glide through the channels on a guided mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) excursion, observing the wildlife: elephants, waterbuck and hundreds of brilliant birds. Take a guided nature walk across the floodplains and learn how to track wildlife, or take to the skies on a helicopter safari* and scan for animals crossing the serpentine channels – unforgettable.
Back at camp, guests may spend a quiet afternoon game viewing from the deck, watch a movie under the stars, savour delicious traditional cuisine and share the day’s adventure around a roaring fire.

Purpose: Wilderness Abu Camp provides sanctuary to the once-threatened Abu elephant herd, and is the base of a pioneering rewilding conservation project. Guests can learn more about the evolution of the Abu Herd, and the careful and respectful integration of its members back into the wild. And leave knowing that their stay with us directly contributes to the conservation of these iconic African animals.
Wildlife: What makes this camp so spectacular is the remarkable mosaic of habitats, which allows a variety of wildlife to flourish in the open grasslands, secluded island sanctuaries and papyrus-fringed channels. Predator sightings may include African wild dog, cheetah, hyena and leopards, the latter often seen draped over a tree branch.
Other iconic Okavango species to look out for include the celebrated elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, impala, tsessebe, red lechwe, warthog, giraffe, and zebra. Birding is spectacular. Look out for malachite kingfisher, white-browed coucal, pied kingfisher, rufous-bellied heron, and southern ground hornbill.
Wilderness Abu Camp: Overlooks an iconic Delta lagoon and vast floodplain teeming with wildlife. Each of the six luxurious en suite tents has its own distinctive furnishings and fittings, including a private plunge pool sunk into an elevated teak deck with glorious views across the water and wildlife.
The shared spaces include an airy multi-decked canvas and timber lounge and dining area, which blends seamlessly into the surrounding wilderness. The clever use of organic elements and local artefacts adds to the natural ambiance of the camp.
Guests can browse our fascinating library, a repository of knowledge on elephant behaviour and conservation. For those looking for something more energetic, our gym offers amazing views over the lagoon and plains. Soothing spa treatments are also on offer to our guests, in the comfort and privacy of their en suite tents.
